My face looks kinda old unhealthy and I have a discolored skin tone and I’m at a young age ( guess I haven’t been taking much care of my face when I was younger and now I’m regretting it) what tips should I know, what should I do, and what products should I buy?
The biggest things that affect your skin are:
Smoking – Don't do it if you hope to have nice skin. Smoking ruins your skin and accelerates the process of aging, as well as being terrible for you in myriad other ways. It also causes lines around your mouth from pursing your lips. Drinking in excess or binge drinking (i.e. drinking more than a glass of wine a day) will also help dull your skin, and of course any drugs you take will as well.
Sun – 80-90% of visible aging is due to sun-damage. Stay out of the sun during peak hours (10am – 3pm) when you can, and wear a physical block sunscreen everyday even when it is cloudy, with an SPF of 30 or higher. I love Eucerin Everyday Protection SPF 30 moisturizer, which can be found at drugstores. It uses physical blocks (like titanium dioxide and zinc) instead of chemicals to help protect your skin for a longer amount of time (chemical blocks need to be reapplied frequently when their ingredients stop working whereas physical blocks create a physical barrier between your skin and the sun).
Diet and hydration – Drink at LEAST 8 glasses of water a day, each being 8 oz. It is preferable to drink 10-12, but you should never let a day go by where you drink less than 8. Many people's premature forehead lines aren't due to age but dehydration. Carry a water bottle around and refill it frequently. Diet is also a big factor. Your skin is the body's largest organ. Therefore, when you are healthy, it will show in your skin just as much as it will show in your cholesterol test. Stay away from processed foods, meat, and dairy, which are difficult to digest. A diet which is mainly plant-based is healthiest, but if nothing else eat tons of fruits and vegetables, and try to eat your carbs from whole-grain sources (brown rice, oats, quinoa, barley, and whole grain breads etc. instead of white bread or white rice). Exercise obviously is also helpful.
Sleep- When you can, get 8 hours a night. Your skin regenerates and heals itself while you sleep, so if you don't sleep enough your skin will show it.
Skin care regimen – Taking good care of your skin mostly means taking care of yourself in general, as outlined above. But using good products is helpful in maintaining a good complexion and reversing the effects of aging once you've done the damage. Use an exfoliant product once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells that make the skin look dull. (Gently washing your face with a clean washcloth counts as exfoliating, or you can use a scrub or chemical exfoliant.) Use a gentle cleanser twice a day, in the morning and at night before bed. Use a rich, non-comedogenic (won't clog your pores) moisturizer at night. In the morning, use the moisturizer with SPF after washing and patting dry your face. Age spots can be treated by a dermatologist. They may prescribe a topical cream like Retina that exfoliates chemically and allows dark spots to fade faster. When you use these, however, you need to be especially careful about wearing sunscreen religiously because if you don't you just make your skin more sensitive to the sun and will reinforce these age-spots. At the drug store, you can find products with Retinol, which is the over-the-counter grade form of Retina.
Massage – You can return bloodflow to the face and encourage cell turnover by giving yourself a light facial massage in the morning as you wash your face. Use the tips of your fingers in a gentle circular motions over the face.
Dry brushing – This is a great technique to help stimulate cell turnover in your skin in general and improve health. Use a soft-bristle skin brush and start at the bottom of your feet, going over your skin in gentle circular motions. Progress up the legs in this manner, and continue up your torso, hands, and arms. Continue on your chest and back. Overall, it should take between 3-10 minutes to do this, depending how long you want to spend. Try to do it everyday or at least once a week to stimulate your skin. The point is to direct the brush the opposite of the way your blood flows out from the heart (which is why you start up from the feet rather than starting from the upper body). This is not appropriate for sensitive areas of skin like that of the face, but it is great exfoliation for the rest of the body. As the name suggests, do it when your skin is dry, before you shower or bathe.
