Should I remove skirting boards before skimming walls?
I’m decorating a room in an old house. The walls are in fairly poor condition and have been covered up with lining paper (not very successfully). I’m in the middle of removing the lining paper and then intend to get a plasterer in to skim the walls.
I’m not sure what to do about the skirting boards though (and other woodwork). They are covered in multiple layers of paint, so one option is to remove them completely and put new ones in after the plasterer has been. The other option is to strip the paint and ask the plasterer to skim up to them. I’m not sure how good this will look though – will the plasterer be able to maintain their definition? How thick/deep is a skim? I’m new to the decorating game, so any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

Personally I prefer to remove the skirting boards, a much cleaner finish, providing the plasterer ‘finishes’ just below where new skirting is to go.
Prime and put one undercoat on new skirting prior to fixing. Cut, fix and fill any fixing ‘holes’. Lightly sand, apply another undecoat then top coat.
A ’skim’ is just that, it ’smooths’ the walls and therfore shouldn’t be very thick.
If you do tremove the old skirting, don’t be alarmed that the boards do not go all the way to the wall, as this is quite nromal and correct.
Another advantage of removing old skirting is that, if you are considering sanding floorbards, you can lift the floorboards and turn them.
This saves loads of money hiring a machine, transporting it and reduces the mess, as quite often the underside of the boards are as ‘new’.
Obviously this is very easy if the boards are not ‘tongue and grooved’, which may well be the case in ‘older’ houses.
